Message Just remember that you need to remove as much of (preferably all) the old gasket material. The less of the old stuff that remains, the better your chances of a good seal with the new stuff.

I always wipe/scrape the heads in an outward direction - this has the obvious benefit of not pushing the old material into the head. I also lay rags over the cam and lightly tuck them under the edge (where the valve cover meets the head) for added protection if there's a lot of wiping/scraping to be done. The biggest challenge is at the front of the head where you have the curved area that goes over the cam - the corners are a pain to get completely cleaned out. Just be vigilant (or in your case OCD :-P) about watching for any scraps that might fall into the head and cam area.

For the valve covers, I have a small flat blade screw driver that just fits into the groove on the exhaust valve covers, so I use that screw driver to clear out the grooves. After that, I take a putty knife and carefully scrape the remaining gasket material from the mating surface of the cover.

You can also take a clean rag, spray some brake cleaner onto the rag and 'disinfect' the gasket surface of the head and the valve cover of any oils. This will help ensure a clean area for the new RTV to adhere to.

As for the VTD post, I pulled it because I had the wrong link in it. But one of the mods took care of it anyway (Thanks Todd/Pat/Scott/Whomever).

Good luck!
